Bentleague Blog 12/14/2018 – The Final Chapter

Bentleague Blog 12/14/2018 – The Final Chapter

First ever tie breaker for Bentleague and it didn’t disappoint.  Forced into the Bubble because of rain, the final five lines were played at Beau Chene.  Special thanks to John Ballard (tennis pro at Beau Chene) for allowing us to TAKE OVER the bubble for Championship Thursday.

Questionable trust had the captains swapping line ups face to face on Wednesday.  1 singles line and 4 doubles lines.  Best of five to crown B IV champion.

Good crowd came to support those playing but ther were mostly there to drink Jay’s Beer, eat his sandwiches, and heckle.
Let’s jump straight to the tennis…
4:30pm singles match
Singles pitted number 1 overall pick Fair against the Sly one Mark Schneider.  Putting his undefeated record on the line, the EGO Fair takes down Schneider in straight sets.  Morale victory keeping the first set close with some long rallies, the Sly one succumbs to the Ego - 4 and 1.  Mr. Pronoun not only got to start drinking early, he had a captive audience behind the glass for the rest of the afternoon regaling everyone about his undefeated season.  Question…If Mark and Donald were on a desert island together, how many times would the “I” word be uttered?
Double Shots 1 CMC 0
5:30 doubles
Cayman and Hal vs. Ray and Jeff
Excellent tennis for the spectators thwarted by an injured Wolf Man late in the 3rd set tie breaker.  Things looked ugly early for the Double Shot pairing in losing the first set.  After some adjustments by the Doc, a hair-do change for the wolf man, and some short arm swings by the favorites, the second set momentum switched and the sets were one apiece.  Third set started favorably for Doc and Cannon but quickly switched to Super Ray and Jedi after a couple of cut shots hit the tape.  SeeSaw battle continued with Cannon ramping up the pace on several forehand winners.  Match of the night ended prematurely when Cannon’s knee said No Mas.  ACL be damned.  Cannon, approach that rehab like your forehand on a short return in the middle of the court and we’ll see you back on the court before Donald Allen buys his first round of beers in B V.  Get well soon my friend.  Upset special averted.

7:00
Ferr and Jacobs vs. Blake and Freddy Olinde
There’s Waldo.  Props to the Captain for calling in the special man for the Championship.  Everyone knows Ananth didn’t want any part of a championship bout so kudos to FreddyOlinde for stepping up to the challenge.  Stuck behind the glass because of a lesson this one didn’t register too much interest from the spectators.  Crowd was more interested in the young kid getting smacked in the head during the tennis lesson and the fit girl with the nice legs and a better back hand than D Autin.  Good thing for the hen pecked one too because after getting dumped by the councilman he probably couldn’t handle more heckling of his serve. Not sure of the scores but I don’t think it was too close.  I did see some fine volleys from Freddy so no more asking Where’s Freddy.

8:30pm
Addy and Billy vs. Mesa and Keller
Captain Billy vs. Captain Mesa.  Witnessed some very athletic shots during the match from these four.  In the end the paper favorites prevailed as expected.  A little too steady and a little too seasoned to let the young guy get the upset.  Match to the Cuban Captain and the Councilman to even up the championship chase with straight set victory.
Double Shots 2 CMC 2

Tony and Perry vs. Jason Miller and Burt
This one had deciding match written all over it when the pairing were set.  And that’s exactly how it played out.  Where to begin…?  Tight battle in the first set.  Up a break early…Double Shots had two chances to serve it out and didn’t.  Hats off the CMC pairing for battling tough and playing very well.  If you want to know just how good they played ask Burt.  Match is kind of a blur after a couple of double faults to lose game 12 serving at 6-5.  All witnessed a very Solid performance by the CMC pairing that dispelled Stallion’s pre-season prognostications.  All I remember is hearing Robbie C giving advice to the Peacock.  It was at that moment that I knew we were in trouble.

Double Shots 2 - CMC 3

And the winner of Bentleague IV is CMC!
CMC…CMC… CMC…CMC…

Hearing that effing cheer in my head has me wanting a drink.  Speaking of…
Looking forward to our PAC Tennis Christmas Luncheon.  12/20 - 11am at the Lake House in honor of the CMC B IV Champs and our fallen but not broken Hero/Warrior.  We have a special thing going with PAC tennis with a special group of guys.  Love most of you and looking forward to tennis and socializing in 2019.  Thanks to all for another successful Bentleague.  Special thanks to the captains, the Commish – Bradley, and the league namesake and Chairman Bentley.

Thinking about observations from B IV, post season awards and predictions heading into the new season but need some help.  If you want to contribute please share and I’ll add it to the season ending blog…

Here’s a start:
Observations:
MVP has to go to the Ego with the Jedi getting runner-up.  The Jedi playing in all matches and only getting one loss is pretty impressive.  The Ego only missing one match but going undefeated solidifies 1st overall selection.
First time number 1 pick overall doesn’t capture Bentleague title.  Mark apologize to Willy.
First time Doug has lost Bentleague title.  Didn’t help his cause but getting zero wins this year.
Speaking of zero wins…has anyone else observed that the aging chairman is getting grumpier as the losses mount and chews with his mouth open.  The train to geritol status is at the station and sir Bentley has a first class ticket.  Cheer up B, you’ll never be as old as Bruce.
Donald definitely better at tennis than his brother.  But Caroline tired of answering questions about why everyone likes John better than her husband.
League is won in mid round selections.  Unless they are taken in the first three  picks Andrew.
Mitch and his pink Koozies can kiss my ass.  That goes for you too Punky Phayer.
The recanting of Burt’s 2018 B IV Title match by Burt about Burt will rival the 10-18 months of Italy stories we had to hear about.
The Vic’ster won’t be getting Christmas Cards from Butcher and Groeneveld.
George still peeved about losing to doubt in geritol batlle royal.  Don’t play him in singles Ryan…let him stew on that loss until B V.
B III secures spot in Bentley’s will with sentimental Birthday post.  The financial advisor may have had an ulterior motive.
Anyone else think Andrew is regretting first three picks.  At least we know what Chris is getting for Christmas (aka.  new unbreakable tennis racket).
Hmmm…Will robbie ever take those tennis lessons he has been talking about since draft night…?
The Peacock definitely brought some life and exuberance to B IV.  I’ll go to war with you any time my friend. Looking forward to you strutting your stuff in  B V.
Hats off to the Gentleman Jason Miller.  When the jeers started after the double faults in the Championship match I seen him try and hush the crowd to try and avert the pending implosion.  Class Act for sure.
I am 99.9 % sure I got the call right on the side line on Burt’s volley as the ball was OUT, but I am 100% sure I got the next call wrong by calling it in.  Game set match CMC.  But…to my dismay…the one voice I heard arguing was Anath.  He could not even see the line from under the net.  This from a guy that has not made a good line call in years.  Now that’s what Bentleague is all about.  Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good heckly job.  Opinions welcome even without merit and fact.
If you have more to add…please send…I have to go watch soccer.

Congrats again CMC – the Crying Cuban Missile Crisis team reigns supreme until B V

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap   Not for the faint of heart…back by popular demand…here is the St. Bernard Swami’s recap of the Bentleague X Draft.   First things first, this is an unbiased take on the captain’s picks and how the teams fared out on draft night.   As the ombudsman of Bentleague you can count on an unbiased evaluation of each team from top to bottom.   Congrats to the Commish for finally getting rid of the cockamamie scoring system that favored top picks more than late round selections.   This is an inclusive league for all PAC members, and a win by Rockin Toupsie or Josh (Mr. Irrelevant) should be just as much as a win by Russ “Don’t call me Russell” Anderson.   Wait…did Josh win any Bentleague matches last year?   I digress…on to the team draft grades. Drafting in the number one position was Hairy Hal Neitzschman aka. Spin Doctors II.   No surprise here with Russ going first overall.   Clear #1 by everyon...

Bentleague Blog/Vlog 10/22/2025 - Round 2 Match 2 and 3

I'll BE BACK! Going with the VLOG to recap match 2 and 3 of Round 2. https://youtu.be/rLpJlQK81UM? feature=shared --- Here are a couple of parting shots as I go to the IR: Sensei Kobrock will live in Bentleague infamy for having a person who was in Germany in the line up. Grant is still winless!  How is this even possible with those fundamentals. Rudy is working hard to fulfill third round expectations...finally gets in the Win column and it only took five matches! Old Knees Harvey should not complain about being at line 6.  Congrats on the W with Millsie. Nick is the only captain this year to not have a previous title under his belt and its showing.   Don't bet on the Ego on Saturday mornings! The youngin's are asserting themselve,s but a few of the old guard still know how to win.  Especially in TSTB's. Round 3 will reveal who had the best draft middle on down.  Time to get some more players involved. Being on the IR during Bentleague is more painf...
