Weekly Recap

10/9/2021

Scores:

Lumber Jocks     vs           Harper Valley PTA

Skip / Kobrock                 Tyler / Hal           6-3,3-6,1-0

Two-hours and 43 minutes and not one put away volley!  Talk about sustained baseline rallies.  Shake and Bake can’t catch a break.  Needed HVPTA to lose.  Rumor has it that rock steady Kobrock did not have his A-game for the first time in months…but if you ask Brad…I am sure he would say he has been carrying Mr. Topspin.  Great win by the underrated Shallow Hal (all he does is catch touch downs) and Captain Double D.

Travis / Ferrer                   Brent / Andrew 6-3,6-1

Another Bentleague match, another win for the Tuth.  And this guy isn’t hurting for confidence either. Just ask him.  Fine bounce back from last year Brent.  This time paired with the Big Burrito, makes minced meat out of Lumber Jocks line 2.  Ferr may have had his mind on Cruising the Coast because the score is not conducive of his normal competitiveness.  Spiritual Gangsta also looked “a little off” but Swami wonders if it was because of SabaTuth and Burrito or because everyone now knows he was the minus in the +3/-3 pairing with his wife.  Swami originally questioning all the wives in attendance, but I’d show her off too Taz.  Sound victory in the end by the western grip John Denver look alike and the guy who never met a burrito he didn’t like.

Bo / Jennings                    Jon / Russell       7-5,4-6,1-0

Bo knows revenge!  With Mr. Ed(ney) this time, he resumes his stance on top of the mountain!! From what I watched, team Harper did well getting it to a third.  Its tough when the best server and the best returner is on the same team and really tough when they are the same guy.  And the dyed one, Mr. Ed, is no sloucher.  Let’s talk Jennings…thinking about sporting a younger look at the Michelob this weekend and need some product recommendations.

Schwartz / Butcher                        Addison / Roberto          6-0,6-7,1-0

Commissioner alert! Commissioner alert! HVPTA involved in another controversy.  So you are saying we get to pick two players who cannot play a regularly scheduled match and they have a month to make up the make up match?  And now we have a mis communication on start time and the suspected culprit has an hour and a half to show up without ramification.  I can see if it was the 2nd match of the day and all four agreed to wait but this delay caused a domino effect on subsequent matches.  First the Dine and Dash and now this.  To the match, rude welcome for the candlestick maker.  5. 0 Addison on a buzz can be lethal as the score would indicate.  Nice rally in the 2nd but Addi can take over when ten is all you need.  Throw in a steady Sundial and this is a big win against strong betting odds.

Seth / Ananth                   Lacoste / Burgess            6-2,3-6,1-0

Closely fought three setter left team Harper in dismay.  When Gregor storms off after a match you know the results were not kind.  Crazy eyes’ plays like an Alpha Ginger willing victory to Ananth and team Lumber.  Swami likes the fact that the Alpha Ginger back’d off his normal power game to be more consistent and that is exactly what he had to do to win this one with the recklessly inconsistent ILM poster boy.  May be a pairing to keep an eye on moving forward.  I see another match in our future young Seth.

Shake and Bake                 vs         One Bourbon

Doug / Gordo                   Paul / Billy          6-4,7-6

So far, Swami loving the captain’s round.  One Bourbon, not so much.  Doug stepping up with the help of Gordo in this one wins a close two-setter.  Very close 2nd set could have gone either way.  Sets up captain showdown when Bentleague resumes.

Donald / Eddie                 JA / Bentley        6-1,6-4

Interesting foursome.  Who would have thought Eddie Burdette would be the best player on the court other than Fast Eddie.  Captain Doug dialed it up perfectly, pairing him with the lefty, allowing Fast Eddie to rip forehand after forehand.  Never seen JA nullified at the next as he was on Saturday.  Great playing Eddie.  Swami knew Shake and Bake’s depth would garner wins and points.  Ps.  You played well too Donald.

Buddy / Peter                   Todd / Mesa      6-2,6-3

Down 22 entering the match, captain Paulie executes the switch-a-roo at line 3 because he didn’t want to get “shut out again”.  GEEZ!  Down 22 effing POINTS!  You need to get a sweep of your own to get back into contention.  Swami SMH!  So, you concede 4 in hopes of taking line 4 and line 5.  Even the mathematically challenged can see this is only a Plus 1 best case option.   Oh - How I wish I had a do over for my cross court back hand at 5-3 in the 2nd.  Well enough about the math.  Solid win for Buddy and Peter against Todd the wet sprocket and El Cubano on the clay.  Why on the clay you might ask…see Commissioner Alert above and the special treatment young Addi is receiving.  Are we playing by some of the rules are all of the rules…?  Good thing for Shake and Bake is that Peter finally gets to know what it feels like in the winners circle.

Josh / Zipp                         Dave / Robby    6-2,6-0

Josh and Zipp take one on the chin vs. Gaelic Gazely and Robby.  Tough ask for Shake and Bake tandem.  Congrats on the 2 pt. line win Paulie.

Tony / Jared                      Burt / Jacobs     6-3,7-6

Jared you played great.  Certainly, well enough to secure the victory.  Lil Nadal takes full responsibility for this loss.  That and the bullshit gamesmanship exhibited by this HVPTA Tandem.  If the sundial name weren’t already taken, I’m offer it up to the recently married Latino Tinder star.  Besides slow rolling change overs, who the eff walks to a ball on the adjacent court at 30-30 when the server has two balls in hand.  And he Walked there and back.  While my server was ready to serve.  Effing Bush League tinder boy.  And the tanned one is just as guilty, sitting there smirking instead of getting his partner in the ready position.  Nice win, I guess.  I should have held at 5-4 so I can’t blame the bush league gamesmanship.  Although I didn’t like it.

Shake and Bake 12          One Bourbon     4

Lagniappe:

One left in the third round as we approach a little hiatus.  Depth starting to play a part.  Looking forward final match of the round, full third sets, and a singles line.  Only time Captains are doing the swith-a-roo is when players are out.  So, still not understanding the point discrepancies for each line.  Time to punch through the glass ceiling Commish…Equal pay for equal work!  Is the singles line next round worth double because only one person is on each side of the court.  And why line 2.  These are the questions that keep me up at night.  Ronny, and the next Commish…please take this to heart when making the Spicoli Rules next league.

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap   Not for the faint of heart…back by popular demand…here is the St. Bernard Swami’s recap of the Bentleague X Draft.   First things first, this is an unbiased take on the captain’s picks and how the teams fared out on draft night.   As the ombudsman of Bentleague you can count on an unbiased evaluation of each team from top to bottom.   Congrats to the Commish for finally getting rid of the cockamamie scoring system that favored top picks more than late round selections.   This is an inclusive league for all PAC members, and a win by Rockin Toupsie or Josh (Mr. Irrelevant) should be just as much as a win by Russ “Don’t call me Russell” Anderson.   Wait…did Josh win any Bentleague matches last year?   I digress…on to the team draft grades. Drafting in the number one position was Hairy Hal Neitzschman aka. Spin Doctors II.   No surprise here with Russ going first overall.   Clear #1 by everyon...

Bentleague Blog/Vlog 10/22/2025 - Round 2 Match 2 and 3

I'll BE BACK! Going with the VLOG to recap match 2 and 3 of Round 2. https://youtu.be/rLpJlQK81UM? feature=shared --- Here are a couple of parting shots as I go to the IR: Sensei Kobrock will live in Bentleague infamy for having a person who was in Germany in the line up. Grant is still winless!  How is this even possible with those fundamentals. Rudy is working hard to fulfill third round expectations...finally gets in the Win column and it only took five matches! Old Knees Harvey should not complain about being at line 6.  Congrats on the W with Millsie. Nick is the only captain this year to not have a previous title under his belt and its showing.   Don't bet on the Ego on Saturday mornings! The youngin's are asserting themselve,s but a few of the old guard still know how to win.  Especially in TSTB's. Round 3 will reveal who had the best draft middle on down.  Time to get some more players involved. Being on the IR during Bentleague is more painf...
