Weekly Recap

Matches from

11/4/2021

Scores:

One Bourbon     vs           Shake and Bake

Kenny / JA                          Buddy / Peter     6-4,6-4

Nice to see a little variety in the line 1 pairings.  Tired of watching Jennings and Bo play every match.  Will be nice when Commish Goof shakes up the rules in Bentleague V III.  The Elf and Sneaky Pete shine in a close one.  Too much fire power on the Shake and Bake side of the net as the BAron and Big Honeysuckle go down in straights.

Jacobs                  Ray        6-3,6-3

Super Ray on the Clay has a nice ring to it.  Tanned one a couple of deuce games away from making this one more interesting.  FYVM.  Nice seeing Ray Ray handling business after a short hiatus.

Billy / Robby                      Tony / Gorde      6-1,4-6,1-0

Prince of the Parish and Gordo Geecko come out strong and almost get the bagel.  Nice rally by Free Willy and Recall Robby to square the match after 2.  Had a little help at 4-4 with a rash of double faults but I remiss.  Shake and Bake right the ship and comfortably win third set tie breaker.  Prince not happy it went to the third but a win is a win is a win!

Burt / Ernie                        Kevin / Josh        6-3,4-6,1-0

Good win by the Shyster and Clark Bar Josh.  Sesame Street combo comes up a little short again.  Captain Paulie’s love affair with Burt and Ernie combo not paying dividends of late.  Swami a little surprised with this outcome but I should say pleasantly surprised.  Don’t underestimate the squirrel! and this Josh kid proving to be a fine replacement for brother Jawn.

Rabon / Cameron                            Doug / Kenny     6-1,6-3

Bogalusa Doug making all the right moves.  If this were a football pairing, money would have been on Cam and Chris, but since it was not…chalk up 2 more for Shake and Bake’s more agile twosome.  Kenny quietly racking up wins and Doug garnering...should I put it in print….ssshhhhhh…Coach of hte year consideration.

Shake and Bake get the sweep – 16 to ZERO. (Paulie needs to right the ship quick and keep this league respectable..  A few more healthy players wouldn't hurt either)

Harper Valley PTA           vs           Lumber Jocks

Russell / Nick                    Bo / Jennings      6-3,6-2

Tired of seeing this twosome get five points every week.  Can anyone topple these guys?  Tim…where art thou?  IS Mr. Ed(ney) the unsung hero of this undefeated twosome?  Let’s give the other guy some credit for goodness sake…it’s not all about Bo guys!  Onlookers witnessed some great shots by Jennings too.  Rumor has it that he didn't like always being Robin to Bo's Batman.  Swami hearing there may be trouble in paradise...is he really unhappy having Bo get all the credit.   May be time to see if he can win without Bo….???

Brent                    Schwartz              6-4,6-2

Sabatuth cementing early MVP candidacy with another strong outing.  Swami thought HIVPTA would save him for Shake and Bake match up but at least they avoided the sweep by playing him in singles here.  Sergeant Schwartz had the fire power but not the consistency.  Once the legs went in the 2nd…writing was on the wall.  Swami does appreciate him buying dinner at El Paso though.  Don’t think we’ll be seeing the John Denver look a like treating for dinner after a loss.  Wait…that reminds me...he hasn’t had a loss since last year when he was on my team.

Addison / Roberto                          Travis / Jeff         6-4,3-6,1-0

Nail biter on the clay enjoyed by many as the temperatures dropped and the wind picked up.  Taz /Hefty combo rises to the occasion in crucial third set.  5.0 Addi almost wills his team to victory with another stellar performance.  No weak spots observed in this foursome as all played well.  Impressed with Taz answering Addi’s power with some deft reaction volleys.  Good tennis and good victory.  Welcome back Jeffro.  Glad to see you out of the dog house and your captain plugging you back into the line up!

Steve / Sid                          Kobrock/Butcher              6-0,6-1

Need to get those matches in.  Sacrifice at line 3 as Kobrock and the candlestick maker cruise. Bagel and a breadstick making me hungry.  Sorry LA Tech Steve and Senor' Sid...not much else to write about.

Lacoste/Eckholdt                            Bloss / Ferr         3-6,6-2,1-0

Another great match witnessed on Ct. 2.  The Two Greg’s came out strong in the first set and appeared to be in control.  Not so fast said the Hustling Ferr Ball.  Swami knows better than to count out these two competitors and as the shot maker (JB) dialed it in with some tricky wind conditions to contend with.  JB's variety of shots seemed to switch the momentum to team LJ in the 2nd.  The Two Greg’s fought valiantly, but in the end...Two Greg's go down but Lacoste wins best dressed.

Lumber Jocks 12-4 (which is exactly what B VII needed.

Lagniappe:

One more match left in the fourth round.  Race to the title is tight and while all eyes will be on the top two contenders, third eye better be on who Paulie plays against LJ.  Have a feeling that match will decide seeding heading into fifth and final round.

Would like to welcome Jacques Peltier to B VII as a replacement to Dr. Death (groin).  Hoping he plays singles on Saturday since there are no rules restricting newbies from jumping in mid round.

Commissioner’s Corner:

Gents,  Another great tennis night last night with 4 third set breakers and unfortunately our second 16-0 sweep for our last place team.  We have a tight three horse race now with one more singles round match remaining.  Gonna be chilli Saturday morning!

Attached are the updated results and standings.  Thanks Caps for getting info in early!

Happy Friday!

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap   Not for the faint of heart…back by popular demand…here is the St. Bernard Swami’s recap of the Bentleague X Draft.   First things first, this is an unbiased take on the captain’s picks and how the teams fared out on draft night.   As the ombudsman of Bentleague you can count on an unbiased evaluation of each team from top to bottom.   Congrats to the Commish for finally getting rid of the cockamamie scoring system that favored top picks more than late round selections.   This is an inclusive league for all PAC members, and a win by Rockin Toupsie or Josh (Mr. Irrelevant) should be just as much as a win by Russ “Don’t call me Russell” Anderson.   Wait…did Josh win any Bentleague matches last year?   I digress…on to the team draft grades. Drafting in the number one position was Hairy Hal Neitzschman aka. Spin Doctors II.   No surprise here with Russ going first overall.   Clear #1 by everyon...

Bentleague Blog/Vlog 10/22/2025 - Round 2 Match 2 and 3

I'll BE BACK! Going with the VLOG to recap match 2 and 3 of Round 2. https://youtu.be/rLpJlQK81UM? feature=shared --- Here are a couple of parting shots as I go to the IR: Sensei Kobrock will live in Bentleague infamy for having a person who was in Germany in the line up. Grant is still winless!  How is this even possible with those fundamentals. Rudy is working hard to fulfill third round expectations...finally gets in the Win column and it only took five matches! Old Knees Harvey should not complain about being at line 6.  Congrats on the W with Millsie. Nick is the only captain this year to not have a previous title under his belt and its showing.   Don't bet on the Ego on Saturday mornings! The youngin's are asserting themselve,s but a few of the old guard still know how to win.  Especially in TSTB's. Round 3 will reveal who had the best draft middle on down.  Time to get some more players involved. Being on the IR during Bentleague is more painf...
