Bentleague X - Oct 10th and 12th Recap

Sundial

The Gang Watching the Final Match

October 10th Thursday

6:00                    Angry Squirrels                           Kiss My Ace Deux

Line 1                  Noah Marquez                Russell Anderson          6-4,7-6               Angry Squirrels

                             Jay Butcher                      Jeff Thompson

Squirrels take down my two prize fighters.  2nd tie breaker not kind to KMA Duo.  Have a feeling these front line guys will be beating each other up in future rounds. If the Candlestick maker has his volley game, pretty lethal combination.  Big If…moving forward!  #fluke

Line 2                  Kevin Phayer                   Robby Economides       6-4,6-1               Kiss My Ace Deux

                             Dave McGuire                Rudy Kalman

C’mon man.  We going to start throwing out the Mayor of Mandeville at line 2.  Is that a sign that McGuire is playing well or a lack of depth and production at the top of AS.  Guessing lack of depth if the squirrel himself is making an appearance at line 2.  RuPaul and Econ win in straights.  Probably wasn’t as close as the score.

Line 3                  Danny Butler                   Josh Clark                        7-6,6-0               Angry Squirrels

Watched this one up close.  Very tight first set.  Thought Josh had won it, actually.  These two were battling.  Dan the Man is a fighter, I’ll give him that.  Have to admit my shoulders slumped a bit when I saw Clark Kent hitting the vape between sets.  STB Swami not surprised with the bagel after witnessing the vape in between sets.  C’mon man…your rivaling token tyler.

Line 4                  David Parnell                  Mark Schneider             7-5,3-6,13-11 Angry Squirrels 15

                             Andrew McQuaid           Joey Dunbar

Smoke and Mirror Parnell does it again.  May have been my biggest disappointment of the night watching KMA go down, especially with a double fault leading 9-8 in the TS tie breaker.  Kudos to the Pouty one and Big Burrito.  Sometime nice guys to finish first McQuaid.

Line 5                  Chris Rabon                    Tony Priola                       6-4,5-7,10-4  Kiss My Ace Deux                                       Seth Monaghan              Skip Scoggins

In hindsight, not sure how this one went to a TSTB because I felt like the Skipper, and I had it under control the whole match.  Would have been a big upset if KMA would have given this one away.  Surprised Crazy eyes Monaghan tried to play the finesse game with Lil Nadal.  Not the best strategy.  Round Mound of Rabon was consistently good but not quite good enough to overcome late night escapades by his partner.  Alpha Ginger must realize we all stay up late and drink and talk trash, some are just better at answering the bell the next day.

Line 6                  Hal Neitzschman          Jack Ellis                          0-6,6-3,10-7  Kiss My Ace Deux

                             Jeff St. Romain               Sid Hauptmann

Captain KMA was worried about this one knowing full well It is not easy to beat Hairy Hal.  Equalizer had to be the fourth or fifth shot by St. Ro.  You just have to hope he has more 3.5 shots that 5.0 shots.  Second win for this KMA pairing so may be dialing this twosome up some more heading into later rounds.  Both have solid games, excellent forehands and the will to compete.  Throw in a little youthful exuberance and you have a recipe for success.  Proud of my guys!

Total Points       4                                         5

KMA dials up another win, but a little disappointed in the point differential with a few missing pieces in the squirrels’ line up.  But…a win is a win. and KMA is 14-1 since inception.  Inching closer to its rightful place at the top.

7:30                    The Killers                      Smash Brothers

Line 1                  Ed Dauterive                   Mark Fair                          6-4,4-6,10-8  Smash Brothers

                             Shane McCarthy            Nick Thompson

Feature match, or so we thought.  Come back Shane makes his debut at line 1 with Ed and he didn’t disappoint.  Dude has some quick hands at the net and hides that suspect back hand well.  More Impressed with Tricky and the Ego though getting a hard-fought W.  Answered shot for shot and didn’t have self-inflicted errors that historically trouble this twosome.  Smash Brothers feeling a little better about themselves after taking down the Killer’s top two draft picks.   Best uncalled for slide of the night goes to Ed (doing is best Alcaraz impersonation), and pink hat nominee for sitting out Men’s tennis after playing in a combo tourney goes to Son of Ed (Gabe).  C’mon man…it was mixed doubles.

Line 2                  Chris Kobrock                 Mitch Tucker                   6-2,6-0               The Killers

                             Donald Allen                   Robert Groeneveld

Well, this just isn’t fair.  I see a mismatch on paper too, but 2 and 0…really!  Going to be a long year for MDB.  No wonder he is now resorting to Vic Morlas tactics.  I know Sundial can hit with these guys…not sure why the score was so lopsided.

Line 3                  Keith Krebs                      Greg Eckholdt                 6-3,6-1               Smash Brothers

Doc Eck was dialed in.  Never close according to onlookers.  Singles lines may have to be looked at again for Bentleague’s future.  Would be nice to have a barn burner or a Grant Jawn Priola battle again.  So far, its been a little disappointing Commish.

Line 4                  Hunt Vaughn                   Billy Spiess                      2-6,6-3,11-9  The Killers

                             Ray Brouillette               Ronny Regouffre

The Steve Jacobs replacement makes his debut.  EfUHunt to the Killer’s rescue.  Trading youth for the tanned one may be the blessing Brad needed.  We’ll see.  Also, could have been the best match no one saw.  Sets were not close, but tie breaker could have gone either way.  I doubt Willy knew the score anyway.  Ray Ray proving to be a find at 7 and now that they have Hunt, could be a contender depending on availability.

Line 5                  Jay Blossman                  Blake Powers                  6-4,2-6,10-2  Smash Brothers

                             Todd Delcambre            George Lampard

Boom.  Smash Brothers may have found a diamond in the rough.  Lampard rose to the occasion in his Bentleague debut.  All the scouting report said is that he used to play baseball.  Well, so did Brad before young Shane forced him to the bench at Grace King.  Have a feeling this guy may play more than the minimum because he showed some athletism.  But beating folks at line 5 don’t make you an MVP candidate.  Thinking Todd is happy the “don’t catch your toss” round is over!  Tough loss for Toad and Jaybo, but good to see squeaky clean Blake get a W.

Line 6                  Brad Humphreys           Mark Ferrer                      6-4,5-7,10-5  Smash Brothers

                             Paul Eskine                     Bentley Harvey

Featured match to close out the night.  Crowd was on the edge of their seats for this TSTB.  Well, the edge of the court anyway.  Got to love it when Eskine is fired up. Haven’t seen that much emotion from the vocally challenged one in 9 years.  Swami is proud of you.  Tennis was exceptional too.  Well…everyone was trying not to make a mistakes but it was a battle.  I better not hear any static for playing line 5 Brad, because the Mouth of Mandeville playing at 6 and losing is noteworthy.  I know this one Stings too because Ferr didn’t want to lose to Brad after that suspect call.  One Unplugged got his 10000 steps in mid-way through the 2nd set chasing down lobs and Old knees Harvey came through when it mattered with crisp clean volleys at the end.  Reminded the Swami of a 35-year Harvey.  Left the crowd wanting more.  That is the way you close out a Thursday night at PAC.  Well…that and a 7$ special at taco bell for jeffro to hopefully erase his 2nd defeat.

Killers come back to the pack with 3-point defeat.  And low and behold, KMA returns to the lead.    And the plot for the Bentleague X thickens.  Smash Brothers climbing back into the race (slowly) while Killers hover.

Oct 12th, Saturday

8:00                    Kiss My Ace Deux                       The Killers

Line 1                  Russell Anderson                        Ed Dauterive                   4-6,6-4,10-8         The Killers

                             Jeff Thompson                              Shane McCarthy

Is the shine off this KMA pairing?  Is it time to shake things up at the top of the order.  Swami has faith they will bounce back. They must.  We are still in first place for Pete’s sake.  Pete who?  TSTB goes to Donkey Ed and Come back Shane.  He really is more athletic than he looks.  Is the Gabe experiment in the past or will the line up return to round one pairing after Gabe gets over his mixed tennis injury.  One win and one loss for Killer duo.  Jury is still out.  Just find Shane’s back hand and hit some cutters to the guy in the muscle shirt.

Line 2                  Rudy Kalman                                Donald                             2-6,6-4,10-8         Kiss My Ace

                             Michael Schwartz                       Kobrock

Another TSTB.  Rudy keeps his winning streak intact just in time for the birth of his baby girl.  Congrats btw.  Be sure to tell her you are undefeated in Bentleague.  Sarge answers after a little hiatus and just in time to split the top two lines.  Good victory for KMA.  Donald wishing for Line 4 again.

Line 3                  Devin Smith                                  Steven Burgess               5-7,6-3,13-15       The Killers

Thought Burgess was a LA Tech guy.  Based on all the calls I got after this match you would have thought he went to Texas with all the Hookem Horns, Captain Hook, Effing got Hooked on Match Point references.  Looks like a close hard fought three-setter loss for KMA.  Hard to imagine that bad a call with witnesses around could be a difference maker in total points.  Hope that isn’t a deciding factor.  Keep your head up D!  Texas (Hook’d em) going down this weekend.

Line 4                  Mark Schneider                           Brad Humphreys           6-3,6-4                   Kiss My Ace

                             Thomas Domingues                    Max Agnew

Samurai gets his revenge on Mad Max and Captain MoM.  Crowd never disappointed when Brad  registers a loss, and this is #2 for those counting at home.  Brad is no Cayman seemed to be common thread after the match.  Thomas (I can beat anyone at P Ball) shines at line 4.  Prince of the Parish likes the way these two complement each other.  Shaping up nicely for final push to the title.

Line 5                  Shawn Potter                                Jay Blossman                  6-3,7-5                   The Killers

                             Alejandro Torres                           Keith Krebs

Close 2nd set left KMA wondering what could have been.  If only they could have pushed it to three.  Good win for the crafty float boat Captain.  Good to see Krebs get a victory without the other Keith too.  Not exactly sure which one is better.  Damn…KMA captain has to figure out a way to get Ale Ale Alejandro a W!  Has to be better than his record.  Right!

Line 6                  Wayne Durr                                   Ray Brouillette               6-2,7-6                   Kiss My Ace

                             Burt Dalton                                   Paul Fuidotti

And it all comes down to this.  Could not play it Saturday so first make up match the year was played on Sunday (9am).  Ironic that Killers couldn’t field 11 and still managed to save Ray Ray for line 6.  Need an APB put on the rest of the Killers squad, but LSU playing Ole Miss may have been a factor.  That and the cross-country team who usually runs on Saturday’s may have made Ray unavailable for Saturday.  JS.  Impressive win for Durr and the Tinder Legend.  Ray Ray and Paulie G didn’t give anything away.  Think the score on the web site may have been in error.  Seen a reference to 7-6, 7-6.  If so, we missed a good one.  7th rounder vs. a 9th at line 6.  Work that magic Captains!

KMA for the win.  Killers go down again.  This time giving up sole possession of First. Just END every round in First!  KMA Delivers on 5 and1 record since inception and standing TALL!

Total Points       5                                                       4

9:30                    Smash Brothers           Angry Squirrels

Line 1                  Nick Thompson              Noah Marquez                6-3,6-3               Smash Brothers

                             Mark Fair                          Jay Butcher

Must see pairings.  These two Smash Brothers on the rise.  Isn’t there a National’s mixed State Tourney coming up.  Need to slow their momentum.  May be the only way to derail these two.  Swami knows…It’s all about Tricky Nicky.  Sure, the Ego is holding his own with the big boys, but this team goes as Tricky Nicky goes.  Ceiling is boundless…but can they keep up this pace without coming back to the pack a bit.  We’ll see Thursday.  Oh wait…Captain’s round shaking things up.  I like it.  Good luck at Nationals Nicky…when is it again?

Line 2                  Mitch Tucker                   Greg Gordon                   6-1,7-6               Angry Squirrels

                             Ronny Regouffre            Dave McGuire

Gouffre…off to a slow start in Bentleague X after coming off of the IR list.  Swami knows that record will improve, so no need to press the panic button.  McGuire feasting at the net (at line 2 again) with Geecko’s heavy ground strokes and flat serves.  Even if he tells everyone where they are going!  Swami recommends not playing the power game against these two.  Expect some off speed and cutters in your future Gordo.  McGuire and Brouilette waging war for battle of best 7th round draft choices.  Come on Joey…up 8-3 in the TSTB and lose.  You could/should be in this discussion.

Line 3                  Keith West                       Kenny Boudreaux          6-0,6-4               Smash Brothers

Must have been a bad wine day and the Swami is having a hard time keeping all the Bentleague Keith’s straight.  Oh yea…How the West (Keith) was won should have won.  Definitely the favorite on paper.  Where the hell is Phillippi Captain?  Why you are playing your 19th round selection at singles Squirrell. Another lop sided singles match.

Line 3                  Mike Mesa                       Andrew McQuaid           6-2,1-6,10-6  Smash Brothers

                             Billy Spiess                      Kevin Phayer

First win of 2024 for Mesa and Spiess.  Normally dynamic duo of Phayer and McQuaid surprise but not on this day.  Two lopsided sets, then a TSTB.  Why were the sets so one sided?  Glad I didn’t watch this one.  Looks like a boring match!  Congrats Mesa and Free Willy on your first win this year.  And its only October!

Line 4                  Steve Toups                     Hal Neitzschman          6-1,6-2               Angry Squirrels

                             Robert Groeneveld       George Strain

Just what Doc Hal ordered.  Send in Toups and Sundial to get George his slump buster first win of B  X.  I’m telling you…Shallow Hal Win’s more than he loses.  Any Captain would be proud to have him on the battle field if not looking at their junk.  I’ve played with Toups (albeit, he is coming off an injury) but, I am surprised that this one wasn’t closer.  And…, I’m always surprised when Groaneveld loses.  ehhh Jaybo!?!

Line 5                  Mike Lane                        Eric Daigle                       7-6, 6-4              Smash Brothers

                             David Butler                    Tom Chamberlain

Lane / Butler beat Daigle and Chamberlain.  Looks like a closely contested battle.  Beginning to question best brother duo at PAC as Butler’s having a nice year-two in Bentleague.  Guess we’ll have to test that one after big bro gets his back surgery.  Thought Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain’s game would translate into W’s on the lower lines.  So far, that has not been the case.  The Detective, so far, a pleasant surprise for the Cuban Captain.  Have a feeling Lil Nadal may see him in a future match.  Daigle…has the game, but not quite enough to carry the mobile impaired Chamberlain.  Don’t worry Tom, I see W’s in your future.  Hopefully, not against KMA

Smash Brothers with 2nd 6 in two matches.  Not good news for their next opponent?  As we approach Round three, they move into Third.  Is it too late?

Total Points       6                                         3

Still looking like a two-horse race!  Swami doubters suck it!

Total Points:

KMS                                                                31

Smash Brothers                                         21

Squirrels                                                       20

Killers                                                            30

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap

Bentleague X: The Sequel Draft Recap   Not for the faint of heart…back by popular demand…here is the St. Bernard Swami’s recap of the Bentleague X Draft.   First things first, this is an unbiased take on the captain’s picks and how the teams fared out on draft night.   As the ombudsman of Bentleague you can count on an unbiased evaluation of each team from top to bottom.   Congrats to the Commish for finally getting rid of the cockamamie scoring system that favored top picks more than late round selections.   This is an inclusive league for all PAC members, and a win by Rockin Toupsie or Josh (Mr. Irrelevant) should be just as much as a win by Russ “Don’t call me Russell” Anderson.   Wait…did Josh win any Bentleague matches last year?   I digress…on to the team draft grades. Drafting in the number one position was Hairy Hal Neitzschman aka. Spin Doctors II.   No surprise here with Russ going first overall.   Clear #1 by everyon...

Bentleague Blog/Vlog 10/22/2025 - Round 2 Match 2 and 3

I'll BE BACK! Going with the VLOG to recap match 2 and 3 of Round 2. https://youtu.be/rLpJlQK81UM? feature=shared --- Here are a couple of parting shots as I go to the IR: Sensei Kobrock will live in Bentleague infamy for having a person who was in Germany in the line up. Grant is still winless!  How is this even possible with those fundamentals. Rudy is working hard to fulfill third round expectations...finally gets in the Win column and it only took five matches! Old Knees Harvey should not complain about being at line 6.  Congrats on the W with Millsie. Nick is the only captain this year to not have a previous title under his belt and its showing.   Don't bet on the Ego on Saturday mornings! The youngin's are asserting themselve,s but a few of the old guard still know how to win.  Especially in TSTB's. Round 3 will reveal who had the best draft middle on down.  Time to get some more players involved. Being on the IR during Bentleague is more painf...
